Google,Yahoo and Bing are the three largests search engines, at the moment Google dwarfs the other two in the volume of users. Google, Bing and Yahoo have joined together in order to create a common vocabulary for data on web pages. This information is collected in the website, schema.org.Since I first wrote this article search results in Yahoo are now powered by Bing.
Schema describe its purpose as:
Schema.org is a joint effort, to improve the web by creating a structured data markup schema supported by major search engines. On-page markup helps search engines understand the information on web pages and provide richer search results. A shared markup vocabulary makes it easier for webmasters to decide on a markup schema and get the maximum benefit for their efforts...schema

There are many more but nowhere as many as there used to be they have been gobble-up by the big three.
Submit Your Site
You can submit your site url to a seach engine Google Yahoo Bing but this in and of itself will not get your site added. When submitting your site you should also include keywords and the description which should be added to the information that the search engine already has.
Being indexed by a search engine only means that your site is listed somewhere but if it too far down the list then users will probably not find it. Research shows that the majority of users do not go pass the third page of search results.
